The Bible talks about Israel’s two great victories over the Philistines. One is the story of Jonathan, the son of Saul, who was the first king of Israel. Jonathan and his armor-bearer took on an outpost of about 20 Philistines and killed them all. But the amazing thing about the story is that Jonathan and the armor bearer had to climb up a mountainside to get to the enemy while the enemy taunted them. Neither Jonathan or the armor bearer were harmed, but fought and killed the Philistines.
The second story is very well known. It’s about David killing Goliath, a giant Philistine. The weapon David used was a sling and five smooth stones but it only took one stone to bring down the enemy.
Now, there is a common factor in both stories that reveals the truth behind each of the victories. In reading about it, it’s very easy to miss but it is not only important in the lives of Jonathan and David, but most important to us today. Read the two verses of scripture below and find one word that is used in both of them.
In the story of Jonathan and the Philistines:
Then Jonathan said to the young man who bore his armor, “Come, let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised; it may be that the LORD will work for us. For nothing restrains the LORD from saving by many or by few.” 1 Samuel 14:6
In the story of David and Goliath:
Then David spoke to the men who stood by him, saying, “What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?” 1 Samuel 17:26
The word common in both verses is, “uncircumcised”. Both, Jonathan and David understood the importance of covenant, but especially the covenant that Israel had with God through Abraham.
Jonathan and David both realized their enemies didn’t have a chance in a battle with them because the enemy was outside of the covenant. In both instances, Israel had God with them to win the battle but the enemy only had superior numbers of soldiers and a giant.
Today, if you are born again, your heart has been circumcised (Romans 2:29) and you have an even better covenant with God through His Son, Jesus Christ. It’s a better covenant with better promises than God’s covenant with Israel. (Hebrews 8:6-10).
Any battle with the Devil and his demonic horde is always done by faith in God and His word. In any situation and because of covenant, the battle is never yours, but God’s. When it comes to finances, healing, or any situation that seems too big to handle, step away from the battle and by faith let God take over. This is why the Bible says you are MORE than a conqueror. (Romans 8:37)
